Things to do in Queenstown in One Day
Explore Queenstown Like a Local
Short on time but big on adventure? Queenstown is the perfect destination for an unforgettable one-day escape. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, this vibrant South Island town is packed with things to do—whether you’re after adrenaline thrills, scenic beauty, or relaxing lakeside vibes.
In this guide, we’ll show you the best things to do in Queenstown in one day, from iconic attractions and top-rated tours to local favourites and hidden gems. Whether you're travelling by rental car, exploring on foot, or joining a guided tour, this itinerary has you covered.
1. Start at Lake Wakatipu
Begin your day at sunrise by the edge of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown’s iconic lightning bolt-shaped lake. We always grab a takeaway coffee from Vudu Café, stroll along the waterfront, and take in the fresh mountain air.
This is the perfect start to your day — and being in your own vehicle means you can find the best lakeside parking spot with ease.
2. Ride the Skyline Gondola
Next, head up Bob’s Peak on the Skyline Gondola. The panoramic views from the top are absolutely breathtaking — the Remarkables mountain range, the lake, and the whole town sprawled below.
We usually do a few runs on the Luge while we’re up there — it’s fast, fun, and great for all ages!
3. Stroll Through Queenstown Gardens
After the gondola, we love winding down with a walk through the Queenstown Gardens. It’s peaceful, full of native trees, and offers beautiful lake views. There’s even a frisbee golf course!
With your rental, it’s easy to swing by and park nearby — no stress, no crowds.
4. Ride the Shotover Jet
In the afternoon, head to Arthurs Point for a thrilling Shotover Jet ride. You’ll speed through narrow canyons with 360° spins — it's one of the most adrenaline-pumping activities in NZ.
5. Hydro Attack – Queenstown, New Zealand
Experience the thrill of a ride inside a semi-submersible shark machine as it dives, jumps, and speeds across Lake Wakatipu.
Reaching up to 80 km/h and diving underwater before launching into the air, Hydro Attack is Queenstown’s ultimate adrenaline rush on water.
6. Earnslaw Cruise – Queenstown, New Zealand
Step aboard the historic TSS Earnslaw, a vintage steamship that cruises across stunning Lake Wakatipu.
This 90-minute return journey offers panoramic views of the Remarkables mountain range, crystal-clear waters,
and the chance to explore the working engine room and decks of a 1912-era vessel. You can also visit Walter Peak
High Country Farm on select cruises. A perfect mix of history, scenery, and relaxation—right from central Queenstown.
7. Onsen Hot Pools
Looking for something a little more relaxing? The Onsen Hot Pools overlook the Shotover River and are an absolute must-do for couples or solo travellers looking for serenity.
You book a private cedar tub, open the sliding window, and let the mountain air roll in. We did this after a long hike and felt like we were in a movie.
Pro tip: go in the evening when the stars are out. Again — flexibility is key, and your own transport lets you time it perfectly.
8. Queenstown Hill Walk
If you want great views without a full-day hike, the Queenstown Hill Time Walk is a fantastic option.
It’s steep, but not too long — and at the top, you’re rewarded with a 360-degree view of Queenstown, the lake, and surrounding peaks.
We’ve done this early in the morning with coffee in hand, and again at sunset with our camper parked at the bottom waiting.
It’s moments like these that really make having your own rental a game-changer.
9. Deer Park Heights – Queenstown, New Zealand
Deer Park Heights offers panoramic views over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the Remarkables.
This private hilltop reserve is home to deer, llamas, goats, and other friendly animals you can feed as you drive through.
It’s also a filming location for The Lord of the Rings, making it a must-visit for photographers and families alike.
10. Drive Up the Remarkables – Queenstown, New Zealand
The drive up the Remarkables access road is one of the most scenic in New Zealand.
Winding high above Queenstown, it offers breathtaking views over Lake Wakatipu, the Kawarau River, and surrounding mountain ranges.
Whether you're heading up for skiing, hiking, or just the view, it's a must-do for road trippers and photographers alike.
Queenstown - A Foodies Paradise
Fergburger – The Iconic Queenstown Burger
You simply can’t come to Queenstown and not try Fergburger. It’s famous for a reason — massive, juicy burgers packed with flavour.
We’ve queued here many times (sometimes in the rain!) and it’s always been worth it. Try the “Southern Swine” or go wild with the “Big Al” — it’s a meal and a half.
Pro tip: Call ahead for takeaway and eat by the lake in your campervan.
Blue Kanu – Polynesian-Asian Fusion
If you want something unique, Blue Kanu delivers with a wild mix of Asian and Pacific flavours. Think fresh seafood, fire-cooked lamb, and beautifully spiced curries.
It’s a great spot for date night or a treat after a long day exploring Glenorchy or the wineries.
The Cow – Cozy Pizza & Pasta Hideaway
Tucked down a rustic alleyway, The Cow is one of Queenstown’s oldest eateries.
We love coming here on colder nights — the open fire, wooden beams, and classic spaghetti or pizza make it feel like a hidden alpine cabin.
Perfect after a trip up Bob’s Peak or the Queenstown Hill walk.
Vudu Café – Best Brunch & Lake Views
Vudu Café has been a go-to for years. Incredible coffee, fresh cabinet food, and one of the best brunch menus in town.
We often grab a table outside with lake views and recharge after early morning adventures. Great for vegetarians and foodies alike.
Rātā – Upscale NZ Dining by Josh Emett
Want to treat yourself? Rātā, led by celebrity chef Josh Emett, is one of the top dining experiences in town.
It features modern New Zealand cuisine, local ingredients, and a really intimate atmosphere. Book ahead — it’s popular for a reason.
Patagonia Chocolates – Dessert Heaven
We always end our Queenstown nights with a stop at Patagonia.
Hot chocolates, handcrafted truffles, creamy gelato… it’s the sweetest way to finish a day of adventuring. You can even buy some for the road!
