10 Must-See Places — including the all time favourite - That Wanaka Tree
We’ve travelled to Wanaka multiple times over the past few years — both in rental cars and campervans.
Wanaka is one of those towns that calls you back, whether you’re chasing mountain air, lake views, or a laid-back vibe.
Let’s explore 10 unforgettable spots in and around Wanaka that are perfect to visit when you’ve got your own wheels.
1. Lake Wanaka & That Wanaka Tree
Let’s start with the icon — yes, that Wanaka Tree.
Just a short stroll from town, this famously photogenic lone willow stands in the lake against a backdrop of mountains. We’ve been there at both sunrise and sunset, and each time felt different — calm, reflective, magical.
Having your own rental car or campervan makes it easy to time your visit around golden light hours or beat the crowds.
Don't have a vehicle? What about an Arrowtown and Wanaka Highlights Tour from Queenstown
2. Mount Iron Track
Next, just 5 minutes from the centre of town, the Mount Iron Track offers panoramic views of Wanaka and the surrounding ranges.
It’s a short, steady climb — one we’ve done as a morning walk with coffee waiting in the camper afterward.
When you’ve got your own transport, it’s easy to fit in hikes like this on your schedule. Freedom is why we always recommend booking your vehicle with Motorhome Republic.
3. Rippon Vineyard
For something a little more indulgent, Rippon Vineyard is a must-visit.
The wine is top-tier (especially their Pinot Noir), but the view over Lake Wanaka from the tasting room? Unbeatable. We’ve parked up our camper, done a tasting, and enjoyed a slow afternoon soaking it all in.
You won’t find tour buses lingering here — it’s one of those places that rewards travellers doing things their own way.
4. Roy's Peak Track
Looking for a challenge? Roy’s Peak is the most iconic hike in the area — and yes, we’ve tackled it.
It’s a full-day walk with a steep incline, but the view from the top is pure postcard material.
With your own camper or rental car, you can get to the trailhead early (before sunrise if you’re keen) and beat the crowds. Trust us, it's worth it.
5. Cardrona Valley & Cardrona Hotel
A short drive from Wanaka, the Cardrona Valley is rich with history and alpine charm.
The Cardrona Hotel is one of New Zealand’s most photographed pubs — and we’ve had our fair share of lunches there by the fire after a morning exploring.
Whether you’re heading toward Queenstown or just out for a drive, this is a great stop — especially when travelling at your own pace in a hired vehicle.
6. Lake Hawea
Just a 15-minute drive from Wanaka, Lake Hawea is quieter but just as beautiful as its neighbour.
We’ve camped here and enjoyed the serenity — no crowds, just glassy water and mountains.
It’s a top pick if you’ve got a self-contained campervan (which you can easily book via Motorhome Republic). The freedom to park up in places like this is one of the best things about travelling NZ by camper.
7. Wanaka Lavender Farm
Now for something peaceful and fragrant — this place is a sensory treat.
You’ll find rows of lavender fields, farm animals, and a lovely shop with local products. We visited in summer and didn’t want to leave!
With your own vehicle, it’s just a few minutes from town and perfect for a slow afternoon outing — especially if you’re travelling with kids or want a break from hiking.
8. Puzzling World
Fun, quirky, and great for all ages — Puzzling World is a classic Wanaka attraction.
From illusion rooms to the giant outdoor maze, it’s one of those places we always recommend, especially if the weather’s not ideal for hiking.
With your own rental or camper, you can pop in and out easily without relying on tours or taxis.
9. Outlet Track (Lake Wanaka to Albert Town)
One of our favourite walks or bike rides in the area.
The Outlet Track follows the Clutha River from Lake Wanaka to Albert Town, and it’s flat, scenic, and peaceful.
We’ve biked it from our campsite and had lunch by the river — pure bliss. You’ll appreciate having your own gear and flexible travel time, which is exactly why we always book our vehicles through Motorhome Republic.
10. Mt. Aspring
The drive to the Mount Aspiring area from Wanaka is one of New Zealand’s most scenic routes, following the Matukituki Valley alongside Lake Wanaka and into the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park. Surrounded by dramatic mountains, waterfalls, and lush farmland, it’s ideal for photographers, hikers, and nature lovers. Perfect for those searching for Wanaka scenic drives, Mt Aspiring hikes, and South Island adventure travel.
