Cromwell - Otago

Discover the Best Things to Do in Cromwell & Bannockburn.

Tucked away in the heart of Central Otago, Cromwell and Bannockburn are two of the South Island’s most underrated gems. If you're road-tripping in a rental car or exploring the region in a motorhome, this area offers a mix of rich history. In particular there are world-class wineries, amazing landscapes, and outdoor adventure. We’ve explored this region many times ourselves—camera's in hand and van packed, after that every visit leaves us wanting more.

1. Visit the Cromwell Heritage Precinct

Take a step back in time at the beautifully restored Cromwell Heritage Precinct, nestled on the shores of Lake Dunstan. Wander cobblestone streets, browse artisan shops, and soak up the history of this former gold rush town. It’s a perfect place for photos, coffee, and above all a taste of Central Otago’s past.

2. Explore the Vineyards of Bannockburn

Bannockburn is often called the “heart of the Pinot Noir.” Home to some of New Zealand’s most acclaimed wineries, this area is a paradise for wine lovers. Take a wine-tasting tour at Mt Difficulty, Felton Road, or Carrick Wines and enjoy panoramic views of the rugged Central Otago landscape.

3. Cycle the Lake Dunstan Trail

One of the South Island’s most spectacular bike rides, the Lake Dunstan Trail links Cromwell to Clyde through canyons, suspension bridges, and vineyards. Rent an e-bike or bring your own for this unforgettable journey.

4. Relax by Lake Dunstan

Lake Dunstan offers calm waters and incredible scenery. Great for swimming, kayaking, or a lakeside picnic, it’s a favourite with both locals and travellers. In addition, there are free campsites and peaceful parking spots if you're exploring in a motorhome or campervan.

5. Gold Mining and the Bannockburn Sluicings

The Bannockburn Sluicings walk leads you through surreal landscapes shaped by 19th-century gold mining. The terrain is dry, rugged, and totally unique—perfect for landscape photography and a bit of adventure.

6. Stone Fruit and Farmers Markets

Cromwell is famous for its orchards—especially cherries, apricots, and peaches. Stop at one of the many roadside fruit stalls or visit the Cromwell Farmers Market in summer for fresh local produce and artisan goods.

7. Scenic Drives for Motorhome Travellers

If you're hiring a rental motorhome or car in Queenstown, Cromwell and Bannockburn make for a perfect day trip or overnight stay. The drive through the Kawarau Gorge or over the Lindis Pass is worth it for the views alone.
